I haven’t been online for the last little while, but I’m finally back. Let me explain.
Two weeks ago, I decided it was time to upgrade Bobbi’s computer. This computer barely passed the Y2K test, and after finding some childhood toys inside that Bobbi had lost when she was 11, and checking the dust rings, we determined that it was at least 10 years old.
I figured that I could upgrade my computer as well, and use all the parts to play Dr. Frankenstein and make two awesome computers at the same time. Why not? Step 1: Get all parts. Step 2: ????. Step 3: Profit! Or something like that. Easy as 3.14159, as they say.
Well, it wasn’t quite like that. The drivers that were included on the CD that came with the motherboard were corrupted. The network adapter and audio ports drivers did not install properly. I made sure that the hardware was actually functioning by installing Ubuntu on this machine, and they worked great (but then nothing else worked, but that’s Ubuntu for me, every time I try it).
The motherboard I got, by the way, was an XFX 8200 (MI-A78S-8209) . So, in case you ever have the same problem, the network adapter drivers can be found here. After installing these drivers, the audio adapter magically started working, and Windows recognized it without a problem. The problem is that it took me 2 days to get a response from XFX’s support, so I was left off the grid all that time.
End of the story: I have a new computer, and Bobbi has my old computer, which works a lot better than what she had before. So far, I haven’t heard any complaints, probably because her number one complaint used to be her wireless connection, and we finally wired her house so she has an Ethernet port in her room. The good news is that after many, many nights of me helping Bobbi get her network back up, she learned enough about the TCP/IP stack, troubleshooting from the command line, and basic network terminology that she could easily pass her Network+ exam. She’s so smart!
Well, after the computer was built, Bobbi and I went camping to Blue Lake, in Ontario. Other than the 2-feet wide beach (seriously!), the place was great. We did not see any bears, but we saw a squirrel named Alvin. Bobbi has uploaded those pictures to Facebook. Check my profile, if you want to see them.
Yesterday, we went on the first of ten dates we will schedule for the next ten weeks. We’re using a book called “Ten Great Dates before you say I DO”, and it’s basically a guide on how to get to know each other more, and deal with certain issues before they come up (kids, finances, family, dreams and expectations, etc.). We just started, but so far I like the format of the book, and would probably recommend it to others.
Man, I love the smell of new electronics.
